“佔領運動”在瑞士達沃斯的世界經濟論壇上向聚集在那裡的“精英們”示威，而在巴西阿雷格里港舉行的世界社會論壇更是多年來致力於對抗他們眼中的“資本主義”。

在南半球35攝氏度的夏日氣溫之下，全球化反對者們在阿雷格里港大聲高唱"再見，資本主義！"，情緒高漲。本次大會的主題就是"資本主義的危機，社會和生態正義"。大約兩萬人參加了在這裡舉行的世界社會論壇的開幕式，並舉行了遊行示威。儘管從數量上而言，社會論壇的參與者逐年減少，氣勢不比從前，但來到阿雷格里港的人們依然擊鼓高歌，手舉標語。幾位參加遊行的民眾表示，

早上去附近的街道和機關逛一圈，簡直可以用慘不忍睹來形容。我現在開始相信社會的整體品質可能”日下” 。中信國小的校地，除運動場外，全用水泥或柏油謀殺之，當然包括那可愛的小池，早已被填平。

文化中心變成”大墩文化中心” 。一樓變成粗糙的”時裝設計”和書法”展，我一望之下，連想進去的念頭都沒。國立美術館的情形類似，只有一處要收費的日本卡通家族展有大人帶小孩參關，其他我連想走進或走上/下的念頭都沒有。

也不會想去玻璃帷幕蓋的市政府--- 這玩藝，在上世紀80年代的西方，早已被宣判死刑，沒想到馬英九的建成圓環和胡志強的市府都採用。哈哈，台灣的命運如此，似乎沒什麼好說的。

近40年的年，大半在台中過。希望上述這種「世風日下」的想法，只是”選舉症候群”之一。我看到台中的教育政治文化機關的死亡。

Billionaire Donates $7.5 Million To Fix Washington Monument

The co-founder of one of the world's largest private equity funds will donate $7.5 million to help repair the shuttered Washington Monument, government officials announced Thursday.

The donation from David Rubenstein, the managing director of the Carylye Group, which he held found in 1987, matches the amount allocated by Congress to fix the 555-foot-tall monument, which was damaged this past summer during the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked the East Coast in August.

In an interview with the Washington Post, the 62-year-old billionaire said that he offered to come forward after government officials indicated they were looking for private donors to pay for half of the needed repairs. "They would put up half the money for the repairs," Rubenstein said. "As a good citizen, I would put up half of it myself."

The high-profile donation from the private-equity titan comes at a time when the sector has taken its share of hits lately, particularly on the campaign trail where both Republicans and Democrats have questioned its role in job creation. But Rubenstein's gift appears to have been in the works well before Mitt Romney's time at Bain Capital became the focus of attack ads; the National Park Service said that Rubenstein came forward to offer financial help almost immediately after the monument's damage was found.

"I would suggest it hadn’t even stopped shaking before David Rubenstein came to me and asked if he could help,” the park service's director, Jonathan Jarvis, told the Associated Press.

The donation also comes on the heels of other, seven-figure gifts to major national attractions from Rubenstein, including a $13.5 million donation to the National Archives and a $4.5 million gift to help out the National Zoo's giant panda program.

The AP reports that the combined $15 million in repair funds will likely cover the cost of repairing the damage caused to the structure during the quake, but not necessarily the water damage or a seismic study or reinforcements to bolster the monument against future earthquakes. Repairs to the monument will likely take at least a year to complete.

"各位女士、先生們，精彩的街頭足球秀即將開始"，福格爾(Adrian Fogel)和他的助手在科隆大教堂前的廣場上一邊大聲吆喝，一邊把一隻帶有笑臉的黃色小罐子放在身旁的空地上。福格爾說，這只黃色小罐是他的招財罐，罐子上的笑臉寓含"笑臉相迎"和"歡迎光臨"的意思。

敵不過潮流的沒落，「敦南商圈」現在傳出最有名的LV旗艦店，已以新台幣近4億元的價格出售；如果真是如此，那未來敦南商圈恐怕將只剩下裕隆集團董事長嚴凱泰所代理的精品西服「亞曼尼（Armani）」，這家喊得出名號的精品名店。

近年來，由於信義商圈的迅速崛起，讓許多知名的國際精品店，都紛紛退出敦南商圈；而現在連最有名的LV旗艦店，都傳出已以新台幣超過3.8億元的價格出售。

根據了解，如果以一樓每坪250萬元、二樓每坪100萬元的價格來換算；在符合市場行情的情況下，佔地超過200坪的LV的敦南旗艦店，最後成交價格可能就逼近新台幣4億元。

另外，如果是以出租的方式，那月租金至少應該也都在百萬之上；LV敦南旗艦店的代銷公司總經理高銘頂便表示：「（如果出租）月租金肯定都在100萬以上，甚至是120萬、130萬，應該都沒有問題。」

LATE in November I arrived at the Jesuit Center in the reclusive hills of Wernersville, Pa., on a blindingly dark and stormy night to begin a silent five-day retreat. Such a scenario might have compelled someone more compos mentis to turn around. But that was the point. As a 43-year-old mother of three wrung out from three years of panic attacks triggered by the specter of financial ruin, I needed a solid period of quiet to recombobulate. Cheaply.

I am neither Catholic nor anything in particular, but I yearned for a snippet of the no-frills spiritual solitude. The Jesuits, I’d read, were the guys to go to concerning such matters. Indeed, to engage in periods of quiet contemplation with a full-stop break from everyday life was central to the philosophy of the Jesuit founder Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556). It still is. Today, some 200 Jesuits are engaged full time in directing spiritual retreats at more than 20 centers in the United States.

But there were other reasons I’d opted for the Jesuit Center in Wernserville over, say, a spa vacation, yoga retreat or vision quest. For one thing, the center advertised an Arcadian setting and drivable proximity from my home in Brooklyn. For another, the cost was $560 for five days, including room, board and a daily hourlong conversation with a spiritual director, who would escort me through Scripture-based prayer and meditation.

Moreover, the more luxe-sounding excursions I’d considered often seemed to involve a time commitment of a week or more, along with New Age locution that somehow did not sit right. A solo quest during which animal “spirit guides” could conceivably rip out my pancreas after the sweat lodge? No.

But while I’d had the notion that it would be tough to keep quiet for five days, I realized, on arrival, that I had not developed a textured sense of what I was getting into. The facility itself, an English Renaissance-style building constructed in the late 1920s, was gigantic and dark — attributes intensified by the resident Jesuits’ ubiquitously posted wish to keep the light bills low. Fantasies of sequestered holy men tending to herb gardens and homemade beer stills were combusted by industrial platters of green beans and pigs-in-blankets provided by Sodexo, the integrated food and facilities management services behemoth.

But there was also an ineffable sphinxiness about the place. For example, I got there an hour and a half late the first night, and there was no one to tell me where to go or what I should be doing. The only signpost was a list of names and room numbers tacked to a corkboard, so I found mine and rollerbagged down the building’s spooky, caliginous hallways until I tracked down my assigned spot. I creaked open the lockless door and found a jumbo crucifix resting on the bed pillow. If Stanley Kubrick had found this place, he’d never have shot a movie anywhere else.

And there were crucifixes everywhere. It’s a Jesuit center. But as someone not only dimwitted enough not to have anticipated a lot of crucifixes at a Jesuit center, but one also whose main visual encounter with crucifixes was watching “The Exorcist,” I found it surprisingly tricky at first to suppress the feeling that blood was going to start gushing down the walls. This was not an apprehension my fellow retreatants appeared to share. Mostly women my mother’s age or older, and to my eye, clearly devout and knowledgeable, they were not talk spoilers. In fact virtually no one made eye contact.

But by the end of my five days, I’d come to see my room as my sanctum sanctorum. I would regard crucifixes as heralds of human suffering and spiritual light. And I’d come to feel a strange closeness with my silent companions. All this was chaperoned by my spiritual director, Sister Barbara Singer.

I met Sister Barbara at 1:15 p.m. my first full day in a tiny, sunlit office on the building’s third floor. An upbeat grandmotherly woman with a plumose crown of lovely white hair, Sister Barbara calmly invited me to sit down across from her and asked me to tell her what had brought me there.

I told her about my stress-related illnesses, which had hospitalized me twice earlier that year; about my sparkly-minded children; about watching my Lear-like father die in front of me; about my divorce, subsequent remarriage and unexpected conception of my son; about my dip into poverty; my husband’s unemployment; my darkest fears; of aloneness.

Sister Barbara listened closely and then said, “What I hear you saying, Susan, is that you feel forsaken.”

Not dealing with abandonment issues: forsaken. Sister Barbara did not then press me to process my relationship with, say, my mother or to consider that I should “own” my feelings.

Rather, she opened her Bible and turned to Matthew 3:17. This is the verse in which Jesus is baptized by John the Baptist, and God opens the heavens and says, “This is my son, the beloved; my favor rests on him.” Sister Barbara read the passage and closed the book. How would it be, she asked, to personalize this passage — to pray with the words, “You are my beloved daughter, Susie; my favor rests on you”? How would it feel to know that God loves you as you love your own children? And then I wept and, finally, cleared my throat. It would feel pretty good. Sister Barbara advised me to go outside, walk, and pray with this. “See you tomorrow at 1:15, and we’ll see what God says,” she said and then chortled.

I followed her suggestion. I brought a pack of cigarettes, Thomas Merton’s “Book of Hours,” and a paper cup of coffee with hazelnut nondairy creamer, and I walked. The grounds of the Jesuit Center in Wernersville number some 250 acres of Wyeth-esque country, replete with undulating hills; groves of shy trees; a pond that’s home to monster koi; a cemetery. Benches positioned perfectly for quiet contemplation appeared providentially every so often.

I sat on one of these at the top of a hill, closed my eyes and sat. I don’t know how long I was there, not meditating “on the breath” or deliberately clearing my mind, but simply internally rolling over the words of my custom-tailored Matthew 3:17. Slowly, though, I grew to feel still and happy.

Later that night, I peeked into the center’s adytum, a dark and lovely stone chapel whose altar glowed with candlelight. I approached a pew and knelt. I thought about my closest family and friends and how Matthew 3:17 might be custom-fit for them, too. Again, time evaporated. That night, I slept 12 hours straight. I hadn’t slept half that much in more than a decade.

But by the third day, I was antsy. How were my children doing? What e-mails was I missing about that cable show and screenplay I was supposed to be working on? I was in the midst of selling my house in Brooklyn and closing on a place in Philadelphia. Were real estate agents going ballistic trying to track me down? How was any of this going to get done?

It had been a bitter morning, so instead of walking outside, I ducked into the center’s craftsy Art Room and busied myself with assembling a collage from magazine cutouts like a psych ward patient, I scoffed. I arrived at my appointed meeting time with my handiwork. “Oh, you made a collage!” Sister Barbara chirped, before turning to Exodus 36:4-7. It was a description of Moses and crew building the sanctuary, as instructed by God. All the volunteers were stuffing the place silly with offerings, causing the construction workers to complain to Moses: “The people are bringing way too much material for doing the work that the LORD has commanded us to do.” Moses agreed. “So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.”

HAD I considered, Sister Barbara wondered aloud, that perhaps I already had enough to do all my work? I doubted it. “Ah, that’s the whole ball of wax, isn’t it?” Sister Barbara said. “To believe, with all your heart: to know.” Then, she asked the startling: Did I believe in Jesus? Sure, I did; in fact, as a punky, truant teenager, I had believed that Jesus was the greatest anti-establishment radical of all time. Sister Barbara laughed and clapped her hands: “Great — so you can relate!” she said. She exhorted me to talk, pray to Jesus directly, with the Scripture from Exodus in mind. “Just see what comes to you.”

That afternoon, I ventured into the chapel again and stayed a long time. It would be awkward to report on what I experienced there; possibly, implausible. Suffice it to say, I left with the strong feeling that I did, indeed, have everything I needed — if only I would stay quiet long enough to remember.

I left the Jesuit Center on a clear, icy night, turning on my cellphone just in time to receive a call from my husband hollering that he and a fellow he’d hired needed to be picked up at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia, followed by a call from my daughters’ father saying that financial aid applications needed to be completed by the next day, latest. Seven voice mails and 108 e-mails left. O.K. For now, at least, I had more than enough to do all the work, and more.

It isn’t quiet, but you don’t have to speak to a soul as you becalm your addled mind/body all day and well into the evening in the Queens day spa’s many single-sex whirlpools and saunas in this Vegas-style facility. The second floor is mixed company, involving the use of spa-issued uniforms and a grove of themed saunas, ranging from gold and jade to mineral salt and cold. KRIPALU CENTER FOR YOGA AND HEALTH, STOCKBRIDGE, MASS.

Avoid the expensive workshops, and Kripalu R&R Retreats are reasonable. Ranging from shared dorms at $164 midweek to private lakeside rooms at $399 per diem, the retreats run all year long and include vegetarian meals, yoga and tai chi classes, and use of the facility’s sauna and whirlpools, as well as attendance at evening events and concerts. OMEGA INSTITUTE, RHINEBECK, N.Y.

Skip the pricey seminars and from April through October Omega’s R&R Retreats cost $25 per day during the week ($38 on weekends) and include classes in tai chi, yoga and nutrition, as well as events. If you can swing the airfare, this spartan island yoga retreat center will welcome the whole family, to the tune of $69 a day for a tent to $129 a day for a beachfront suite for a one- to six-day stay. It’s a hard-core setup. No meat, no salt, no caffeine, and everyone follows the same, no-slack schedule: Up at 6 a.m. for meditation, followed by an hour and a half of yoga at 8, then onto a 10 a.m. veggie brunch. Taiwan tycoon's son sues for $4bn in family dispute

Formosa Plastics is one of Taiwan's biggest industrial companies

The eldest son of the late Taiwan tycoon Wang Yung-ching says he has sued in Hong Kong to recover $4bn (2.6bn gbp) worth of disputed assets.

Winston Wong alleges that the assets belong to the estate of his father, the founder of Formosa Plastics, who died in 2008 without a will.

Mr Wong claims the assets were wrongly siphoned off by members of his father's third family and company executives.

The case reflects the succession issues faced by Asia's corporate dynasties.

Earlier this year, a bitter family feud erupted in Hong Kong between the four families of billionaire Stanley Ho over his Macau casino business.

It was only resolved when Mr Ho gave up almost all his share of the business he had built up over five decades.

Mr Wang, who was once Taiwan's richest man, had three wives, but only the first wife was registered as his official wife and she did not bear any children.

Mr Wang had five children with his second wife, and four with his third.

"Since my father's death more than three years ago, I have sought a full and transparent global accounting of all assets that should have been included in his estate," Mr Wong said in a statement.

"What I have found, through an extensive independent international investigation, is a web of deception intended to conceal his assets and deny the majority of his heirs, including my brother and sisters, their rightful legacy," he added.

The lawsuit names the daughters of the late Mr Wang's third wife - Susan, Sandy and Diana Wang - as well former Formosa Plastics finance employees as among 13 defendants.

Mr Wong alleges they siphoned off assets that should be part of the late Mr Wang's estate by using Hong Kong and other corporate vehicles owned by secretive overseas trusts.

Mr Wang died in the US in 2008 at the age of 91.

He began his business career selling rice and started Formosa Plastics in 1954 and turned it into one of Taiwan's biggest companies.

It may sound odd but since the 1960s Singapore has been slowly remaking itself as a garden city. Tiny, dense, hyper-urban and constantly clawing back land from the sea to accommodate its booming centre, the city-state has nevertheless seen green tentacles creeping into every corner, every central reservation, every sliver of leftover sidewalk. Plants here thrive in the year-round tropical climate and grow in the most obscure places. The effect is impressive: a skyscraper city framed by palms and blooming bougainvilleas.

But no matter how green the city is becoming, it has always been defined more by its architecture than its horticulture. Most recently, Marina Bay Sands, an unimaginably vast casino and hotel complex, has become the city’s de facto symbol. Desperate not to loose out to the urban hubs emerging in the Middle and Far East, Singapore set out to attract tourists by building the most expensive hotel the world has ever seen. At a cost of more than $5bn, it surpasses even the dripping gold of the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The hotel is built on reclaimed land, across the bay from the city’s Central Business District, and operated by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. At 57-storeys high and with 2,561 guest-rooms, the structure straddles the city like a colossus. Singaporeans are discouraged from visiting by a S$100 (£49) levy on entrance; tourists can enter for free. Despite this, the casino, along with another in nearby Sentosa, is set to surpass the whole of Vegas in revenue (though not Macao, which is in another league). Singapore – puritanical and strait-laced, with its abiding acceptance of law and order and its aversion to chewing gum – finds itself in an uncomfortable position: its most iconic building, the one which symbolises its skyline like no other, is its “IR”, or “Integrated Resort” (they can’t quite bear to call it a casino). And apart from its surfboard-shaped roof garden, it isn’t very green at all.

The city’s solution has been to counterbalance the casino by constructing a huge green Eden, the Gardens by the Bay project, which is due for completion next summer. Singapore’s answer to New York’s Central Park, the gardens comprise a green corona which will encircle the bay to create a ring of almost continuous green space at the centre of the expanded city, transplanting its heart from the crowded colonial centre with its familiar landmarks (Raffles, the old post office, now the Fullerton Hotel and the rest) to a new CBD. It has realised that towers, the ubiquitous signifier of commercial modernity, are not enough to make it distinctive, but this garden certainly is.

Stand on top of the Integrated Resort (the best thing about it – you can’t see it from its own roof), look down and what catches your eye is not the city’s dense matrix of towers but a pair of seductively curvaceous greenhouses and a forest of diaphanous steel mushrooms. To a northern European, there is something desperately counterintuitive about building a greenhouse in the tropics but here they’ve been employed to introduce non-native species in a theatrical burst of colour largely absent from the rainforest greens of local vegetation. The structures are stunning. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre, an international architecture firm based in London, they look much like the inheritors of that very British tradition of glass houses which led to Crystal Palace and Kew’s Palm House.

Vast roofs stretch into the distance with the lightness of a spider’s web. The larger, flatter greenhouse, the Flower Dome – open temporarily this weekend to host the World Orchid Festival – covers nearly 200,000 sq m, rises to 38m and creates an artificial world which resembles the 1960s sci-fi visions of lunar greenhouses. Its landscape embraces bulbous South American trees, huge succulents, African baobabs and vast fiery carpets of red and gold flowers. The other “biome” is taller, its structure like a wave of glass and contains a simulated mountain up which grows the greenery of a tropical forest. Its roof reaches 58m and it creates an extraordinary landmark, a crystal mountain in the city’s flat, watery centre.

Wilkinson Eyre has made a successful habit of creating elegantly, and seemingly effortlessly, engineered structures that quickly come to define new or revived city centres. The firm’s “Winking Eye Bridge” over the Tyne has become a symbol of Newcastle’s regeneration; the 100-storey International Finance Centre in Guangzhou is one of the slickest skyscrapers of recent years; and the cable car in London’s Docklands (currently under construction) looks set to redefine this disconnected, desolate flatland.

These greenhouses are the finest thing the firm has done. But they are not the only structures in the gardens. Equally prominent are the eccentric “Supertrees”. Designed by the gardens’ Bath-based landscape architects Grant Associates and London engineers Atelier One and Atelier Ten – in a curious echo of a colonial past this is a completely British project – the trees are a forest of steel armatures which rise between 25-50m, their structures composed of a complex, twiggy network of steel. They are designed to act as frames for climbing plants, creepers and “epiphytes” which clad the trees of the tropical rainforests.

The guiding spirit behind the gardens is Dr Kiat W Tan. “We need to grab people’s attention,” he tells me, “and these structures are about creating a ‘wow factor’. Education is good, but without entertainment no one will pay attention.”

Tan has high hopes for what the gardens might achieve. “They can teach civic manners – for example, how to use and inhabit public space. But they also create a sense of belonging. This is prime real estate in the Central Business District and yet people can feel they own a bit of it, and that this is their park. It counterbalances the casino, a paradise to its mammon with buildings that become condominiums for plants.”

The gardens represent a huge civic investment – S$1bn spent on the greening of prime land – but the city is clear that it creates value. Just like Central Park, the plots around the gardens will become highly desirable, massively raising their value in an already expensive location.

The project is not, of course, only for Singaporeans. The city is already a magnet for tourists: its location serves as a genuinely cosmopolitan metropolis at the heart of Asia, which makes it popular with Chinese and Indians, as well as with Westerners looking for that touch of Asian exoticism minus its chaotic flipside. The gardens, with their delicate ecosystem of burgeoning tropical growth and carefully controlled spread, have become the perfect metaphor for this meticulously and intelligently-planned city. And what a nice touch that even the plants have been given megastructures and skyscrapers to allow them to compete with the city on equal terms.

新加坡的新地標

自60年代起，新加坡慢慢地將自身打造為一個花園城市——這種說法聽起來或許有些怪異。在這個狹小、擁擠、高度城市化並且不斷通過填海造田的城市國家，綠色的蔓藤爬滿了每一個角落、中央綠化帶乃至步行道的邊邊角角。得天獨厚的熱帶雨林氣候給綠色植物帶來了勃勃生機，在人們最注意不到的地方也潛滋暗長。新加坡由此給人留下了這樣的印象：棕櫚樹和花花草草環繞點綴下的一座摩天大廈林立的現代化都市。

但無論城市變得多麼“綠色”，它終歸是由建築物、而非園藝來定義的。最近，集賭場與酒店於一身的綜合建築體濱海灣金沙酒店(Marina Bay Sands)成為新加坡實際意義上的象徵。為了不遜色於中遠東地區興起的城市中心，新加坡通過建造世界上最華貴的酒店來吸引遊客。這座酒店造價逾50億美元，甚至超過了阿布扎比堆金砌玉的酋長宮殿酒店(Emirates Palace)。

這座酒店建在填海而成的土地上，與新加坡中心商業區隔海相望，由拉斯維加斯金沙集團(Las Vegas Sands Corporation)經營管理。這座57層的酒店擁有2561間客房，好似與城市跨海灣相望的一座巨像。（外國）遊客可以免費進入賭場，而新加坡本國人則需交納100新元(約合49英鎊)的“門票”，政府希望以此勸阻國民前來賭博。儘管如此，這家賭場加上另外一家位於附近聖淘沙(Sentosa)的賭場，合計收入將超過整個拉斯維加斯（但澳門的賭場不算，因為那是另一個故事）。向來以其清教徒式的拘謹、恪守法律和規則以及反感口香糖而著稱的新加坡，發現自己的處境有些尷尬：它最具代表性的建築物，最顯眼的地標性建築，被稱為“IR”或曰“一體化度假村”（直接稱之為賭場，新加坡人有些難以承受）。而除了衝浪板形狀的屋頂花園之外，它還真算不上有多麼“綠色”。

在這方面，新加坡的對策是修建一個巨大的綠色伊甸園，即濱海灣花園(Gardens by the Bay)項目，以此對賭場加以“制衡”。該項目預計將於明年夏季完工。作為紐約中央公園的“新加坡版”，新公園被設計成一個環繞濱海灣的綠色花冠，涵蓋了擴張後的城區中心地帶幾乎沒有間隔的綠色空間，將新加坡的中心從老城區擁擠的殖民風格的建築群落區（包括老郵局所在地萊佛士(Raffles)，現在是Fullerton酒店，以及周邊其他的建築）遷移至此。新加坡意識到，作為現代商業標誌物而無處不在的高層建築，並不足以使自身與眾不同，但這樣一個花園卻肯定可以。

站在這個“一體化度假村”的頂層（最有意思的是:你從屋頂看不到度假村本身）俯瞰，最吸引人眼球的不是城市密密麻麻的高層建築，而是兩座曲線優美的溫室以及林立著的鋼鐵構架透明蘑菇頂“森林”。從一個北歐人的角度來看，在熱帶雨林地帶建立溫室，真是對直覺的莫大挑戰。這些溫室實際上用於培育雨林中無法生長的外來植物，通過這些植物增加本地沒有的自然色調。這些建築令人震撼。它們是由倫敦Wilkinson Eyre設計的，看起來繼承了英國玻璃房的傳統，讓人想起英國的水晶宮(Crystal Palace)和皇家植物園(Kew's Palm House)。

巨大的屋頂一直延展到遠方，帶有一種蛛網一般的輕盈與靈動。那個規模更大、也更為平滑的溫室被稱之為“花穹”(Flower Dome)，最近因承辦世界蘭花節而對公眾臨時開放。花穹佔地近20萬平米，高38米，修造出一個類似上世紀60年代科幻版本的月球溫室環境。溫室中的景緻包括球根狀的南美樹木，巨大的多汁植物，非洲猴麵包樹，以及由鮮紅色和金色鮮花織成的巨大花毯。另外一個“生態穹頂”更高一些，結構就像是由玻璃組成的層層海浪，其中模擬了一座生長著綠色熱帶植物雨林的山脈。這間溫室高達58米，成為了一個非同尋常的地標——被城市相對平緩的輪廓線襯托出的水晶山。
Wilkinson Eyre養成了一種成功的習慣，即建造優雅、看似毫不費力的建築物，而這些建築物會迅速成為或者復活為城市中心的“名片”。該公司在泰恩河上修建的“眨眼橋”(Winking Eye Bridge)，已經成為紐卡斯爾市復興的象徵；在廣州修建的高達100層的國際金融中心，是近年來最漂亮的摩天大樓；而倫敦城港區的纜車項目（目前在建）則將重新定義這一支離破碎、荒涼的平坦地帶。

這些溫室是這家設計公司最傑出的作品。但它們並非花園中唯一的建築物。同樣搶眼的還有那些古怪的“超級樹”(Supertrees)。它們的設計者是總部位於巴斯的景觀設計所Grant Associates和倫敦設計機構Atelier One and Atelier Ten。作為對以往殖民地年代的巧妙回應，這是一個徹頭徹尾的英式項目。 “超級樹”是一片25至50米高的鋼鐵支架叢林，由枝繁葉茂的繁複鋼鐵網絡構成。之所以設計“超級樹”，是為了給熱帶雨林裡的攀援植物、匍匐植物和附生植物提供生長空間。

這些花園背後的靈魂人物是Kiat W Tan博士。 “我們需要抓住人們的注意力，”他告訴我，“而這些建築正是為了讓人們發出驚訝聲。教育是不錯，但如果沒有娛樂因素，就抓不住人們的注意力。”

Tan對這個花園將實現的東西抱有很高的期望。 “它們可以起到教育民眾的作用——比如說，如何使用公共空間。它們同時還能夠產生一種歸屬感。雖然它是地處中央商務區的高檔地產項目，但人們還是能產生一點擁有感——這是他們的公園。”

公園代表著巨大的市政投入——在主體場地的綠化上花費了10億新加坡元——但新加坡明白，這種做法能夠創造價值。與紐約中央公園一樣，花園周邊的地產會變得非常搶手，並大幅推升本就不菲的地產價格。

早上跑步。去靜岡‧藤枝。此行發現不少好地方，而靜岡更是令人難忘。書店中的美術書也很豐富，我買本《日本之靜》The Mirror of Japan 以及專門編給外國人學的日語書。在伊勢丹百貨內午餐，蛋糕很好。

静岡伊勢丹1階に実用衣料ショップ「トラヤ」があるが、これは静岡伊勢丹の売り場ではない（外部テナントとしての出店）ため、「トラヤ」での買い物については各種サービス対象外となる。
かつて、現店舗1階の呉服町通りに面した一角にファストフード店「ロッテリア」が出店していたことがある。関東地方の三越店舗（銀座、新宿、横浜など）1階に出店していた「マクドナルド」と同様の形式であったが、現在は撤退しており伊勢丹の売り場となっている。

鉄舟寺

鉄舟寺（てっしゅうじ）は、静岡県静岡市清水区にある臨済宗妙心寺派の寺院。山号は補陀落山。本尊は千手観音菩薩。

歴史 [編集]

飛鳥時代藤原氏の出身である久能忠仁が久能山東照宮付近に建立した堂に始まり、その後奈良時代の僧行基が来山して久能寺と号したという。平安時代に入って天台宗に改められ、1570年（永禄13年）武田信玄によって現在地に移された。

江戸時代には朱印寺領として200石余りを与えられ、多くの支坊を有したが、江戸時代後期あたりから衰退し、明治に入ると無住（住職がいないこと）になって寺は荒廃してしまった。

その後、旧幕臣で明治以降に静岡藩権大参事も務めたこともある山岡鉄舟が、臨済寺から今川貞山を招いて復興し、寺号も鉄舟寺と改められた。

久能寺経

法華経（久能寺経）19巻

現存最古の一品経（法華経二十八品を一巻毎に書写したもの）。現在は東京国立博物館に寄託。永治2年（1142年）待賢門院の出家に際して、鳥羽法皇や美福門院をはじめ、近臣や女房らが加わった逆修供養のために作られた。元は法華経二十八品に開教と結経を加えた三十巻か、或いは更に『阿弥陀経』『般若心経』を加えた三十二巻本だったと想定される。「譬喩品」は待賢門院自らの結縁によるもので、その写経の筆者は近侍の女房中納言の弟で、当代屈指の能書で知られた藤原定信。また、書写名は不明だが「安楽行品」の書は穏やかで優美な行書気味の書風で、当時の能書の中でも特に優れた人物の手になる。

龍華寺（りゅうげじ）は静岡県静岡市清水区村松にある日蓮宗の寺院。山号は観富山。本尊は釈迦如来。高山樗牛ゆかりの寺。

歴史 [編集]

1670年（寛文10年）小浜市出身の日近上人により創建された。晩年にはここから見える富士の景色を気に入り、身延の大野山本遠寺から移り住んだ。そして上人自ら大野別院とした。

日近上人は、東山天皇の帰依を受け、皇室祈願寺と定め、天皇により観富士龍華寺と名づけられた。本堂と庭園（観富園、須弥山式庭園）は、徳川頼宣と徳川頼房が寄進をし、名匠をして10数年かけて造られた。

天然記念物など [編集]

境内のソテツの雄株は、日本で最古最大で国の天然記念物に指定されている。根廻6mで、樹齢1,100年と推定される。雌株は、根廻4mで樹齢800年と推定される。
境内のサボテンは、樹齢は推定300年蘇鉄とともに中国上海にある龍華寺より移植されたと伝わる。

草薙神社（くさなぎじんじゃ）は、静岡県静岡市清水区草薙にある神社である。式内社で、旧社格は郷社。日本武尊を祀る。

歴史 [編集]

日本神話における日本武尊の東征のとき、この地の国造が謀って日本武尊のいる野原に火を放ち、日本武尊は天叢雲剣で周囲の草を薙ぎ向火を放って難を逃れたという地であると伝える。

景行天皇53年、天皇は日本武尊の勲功の地を尋ね、同年9月20日、当地に日本武尊を祀る社を建立し、神体として草薙剣を奉納したと伝える。草薙剣は朱雀元年、天武天皇の勅命により熱田神宮に奉祀された。延喜式神名帳には「駿河国有度郡草薙神社」と記載され、小社に列している。当初は現在地の西の東海道に面した天皇原に鎮座していたが、葦毛の馬に乗って社前を通ろうとすると必ず落馬したといい、平安時代に現在地に遷座した。

中世以降、武家の崇敬を受け、武田氏・本多氏・豊臣氏が神域の山林を安堵した。徳川家康は天正18年（1590年）に社殿を造営し、慶長7年（1602年）には朱印地50石を寄進した。明治12年7月に郷社に列格した。

同区庵原の久佐奈岐神社（こちらも式内社）も当社と同様の由緒を伝え、江戸時代までは当社に対して「東久佐奈岐神社」と称していた。

祭事 [編集]

9月20日の例祭では、安政年間から狼煙から発展した「龍勢（流星）」という花火の打ち上げが行われており、昭和59年3月に県の選択無形民俗文化財に指定された。

Taiwan is an island which has for all practical purposes been independent since 1950, but which China regards as a rebel region that must be reunited with the mainland - by force if necessary.

China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, when the defeated Nationalist government fled to the island as the Communists, under Mao Zedong, swept to power.

Long-standing tension with the mainland has eased since the China-friendly President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May 2008. In July 2009 the leaders of China and Taiwan exchanged direct messages for the first time in more than 60 years, albeit in their respective party functions, and not as national leaders.

And in June 2010, the two countries signed an historic trade pact that was described by some analysts as the most significant agreement in 60 years of separation.

Mr Ma's predecessor, Chen Shui-bian, had angered China with moves towards formal independence, and relations had been severely strained.

Despite the recent thaw, Taiwanese officials complain that Beijing has kept increasing the number of short-range missiles aimed at Taiwan.

In the past the military threat from the mainland has been partly offset by the pivotal relationship between Taipei and Washington, which is the main weapons supplier to the island - one of the world's biggest buyers of arms. Beijing regularly expresses anger at US arms sales to Taiwan.

Diplomatic isolation

China insists that nations cannot have official relations with both China and Taiwan, with the result that Taiwan has formal diplomatic ties with only two dozen countries - Pacific, Latin American and African states in the main.

Taiwan has no seat at the United Nations, having lost it to China in 1971. Repeated attempts to regain representation at the UN have been blocked.

Despite its diplomatic isolation, Taiwan has become one of Asia's big traders. It is considered to have achieved an economic miracle, becoming one of the world's top producers of computer technology.

And past tensions notwithstanding, Taiwan and China enjoy healthy trade links. China is Taipei's number one export market.

For decades, the island was an authoritarian one-party state ruled by the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang or KMT), which under Chiang Kai-shek controlled much of China before the Communists' rise to power in 1949.

In the early 1990s, however, Taiwan made the transition to democracy and the KMT's monopoly on power ended completely in 2000, with the election of President Chen Shui-bian of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Unlike the KMT, which seeks a united, non-Communist China, Mr Chen was a passionate supporter of formal independence, straining relations with Beijing.

Although he won a second term in 2004, persistent corruption allegations surrounding the president and his family undermined Mr Chen's popularity, and contributed to the DPP's loss to a resurgent KMT in the 2008 presidential election.

The former IBM Building designed by famed architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe will get a new tenant and a new name.

The American Medical Association said Friday that it will move its Chicago headquarters to the iconic modernistic tower at 330 N. Wabash Ave. in September 2013. At that time, the 52-story tower will be renamed AMA Plaza.

The new location is two blocks south of the AMA's current home at 515 N. State St., which it has occupied since 1990. The physicians trade group will be moving out before its lease expires in August 2015.

The AMA's arrival continues the revival of the 39-year-old riverside landmark that sits half vacant since losing key tenants in the past decade. IBM, which constructed the building to house its Chicago offices, moved out in 2005. The Jenner & Block law firm departed in 2009 for a new River North office tower.

A 320-room luxury hotel, occupying the first 12 floors, is expected to open in 2013.

The AMA plans to occupy between 275,000 and 300,000 square feet on floors 39 through 47, said the association, which has 1,100 employees in Chicago.

The move concludes a long property search that included potentially anchoring a new development at Union Station. Those plans fell through.

"It's been a thorough and exhaustive process, and we feel this decision makes good sense economically and logistically," Dr. James Madara, the AMA's chief executive officer, said in a statement. "It will allow us to upgrade our work environment with minimal disruption to our current work flow and our employees' commutes."

Terms of the AMA's 15-year lease were not disclosed. The AMA was assisted in its search by Chicago-based Jones Lang LaSalle.

The building, which was Mies' last American building, was designated a Chicago landmark in 2007 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. It is owned by a joint venture including Chicago-based Prime Group Realty Trust.

Grand Central Terminal (GCT)—often incorrectly called Grand Central Station, or shortened to simply Grand Central—is a terminal station at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. Built by and named for the New York Central Railroad in the heyday of American long-distance passenger trains, it is the largest train station in the world by number of platforms:^[3] 44, with 67 tracks along them. They are on two levels, both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower, though the total number of tracks along platforms and in rail yards exceeds 100. When the Long Island Rail Road's new station opens in 2016 (see East Side Access), Grand Central will offer a total of 75 tracks and 48 platforms. The terminal covers an area of 48 acres (19 ha).

The terminal serves commuters traveling on the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in New York State, and Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. The terminal used to be served by Amtrak, but in 1991 their trains moved to nearby Pennsylvania Station as a result of the completion of the Empire Connection.

Although the terminal has been properly called "Grand Central Terminal" since 1913, many people continue to refer to it as "Grand Central Station." "Grand Central Station" is the name of the nearby post office, as well as the name of a previous rail station on the site, and it is also used to refer to a New York City subway station at the same location.

"When I got there, my boyfriend was there in his linen suit with a little folder that he handed to me. In it were two business-class tickets to the Maldives." Her boyfriend had hired the honeymoon suite, only accessible by boat, at luxury resort Soneva Fushi. "It was definitely the most romantic present I have ever had," she says.

For many like Ms. Phillips, a trip that stays with you forever is a far more poignant and personal gift than an expensive designer item or hastily bought jewelry. It is a chance to create unique memories and experience cultures one would perhaps otherwise never have access to.

Last year, Arathi Cole's husband gave her a trip to Cambodia, organized by bespoke travel company Excursionist, for Christmas. If your idea of heaven is having your very own island in the Caribbean for the day without a soul in sight, Los Roques is where you can fulfill your ultimate escapist fantasy. Located in the clear turquoise waters off the coast of northern Venezuela, this archipelago of 350 islands is a protected national park, abundant with coral reefs, sea turtles and bird life.

On the largest island of Gran Roque, a peaceful, charming town with sandy streets and a pretty white beachside church, guests stay in one of a handful of well-run, chic posadas, where meals are included in the price. Each day, guests are taken by speedboat to a different secluded or empty island and set up with a large parasol for shade and an icebox packed with a delicious lunch (some of the bigger islands have cafés); otherwise, you are left to your own devices until the arranged pick-up time. Gourmet Adventurer

Taking in the aromatic spice markets, Berber villages and Moroccan haute cuisine, a three-day culinary adventure in Marrakech is not only a way to improve one's repertoire, but a chance to soak in some history and culture as well.

From a base at Winston Churchill's hotel of choice, the historic Mamounia, you can organize varied itineraries through luxury travel company Boutique Souk. For the foodie, there is a guided tour of the Medina, with a visit to the spice and food markets and a chance to try a tanjia—a local dish of marinated meat cooked in a clay pot. It finishes with a sunset visit to the open-air food market Jemaa el-Fna, where visitors can sample delicacies from sheep brains and snails to tripe (for the less adventurous, there are mint teas and sweetmeats). Day two starts with another trip to the markets, this time to find fresh vegetables, herbs, spices and meat for the day's lunch. Guests are then taken to a traditional riad for a cooking lesson, including preparation of a mezze of Moroccan salads and a tagine, such as chicken with preserved lemon. Afterward, on the riad's rooftop amid spectacular vistas, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor, washed down with local wines.

The final day is an excursion to the Ourika Valley, with a trip to a Berber mountain market. After stocking up on delicious spices, visitors take part in a bread-making course and eat lunch at a local farm. Finish the day with a dinner in a private room in the Mamounia's excellent restaurant, Le Marocain, feasting on dishes such as pigeon pastilla and couscous with spiced Merquez and sausages, while being serenaded by a Berber troupe.

The Spiritualist

If your loved one's voyaging interests lie deeper than acquiring a few trinkets and a suntan, this Cambodian adventure may be your ticket to their heart. Organized by Excursionist, it includes the chance to meet with monks and stay in a monastery, dine next to a 1,000-year-old temple and explore Angkor Wat with an archeologist.

Beginning in Phnom Penh, with a stay at Raffles Hotel, the first few days are spent exploring the city's sites, including the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Then, guests travel to Angkor Wat, taking in spectacular aerial views of Prasat Kravan, Srah Srang, Pre Rup, Ta Som and East Mebon temples on the 45-minute flight. After meeting up with the archeologist guide, visitors take a cycling tour (bikes are provided) through the temple complex and north toward the south gate of Angkor Thom, to check out the centerpiece of this ancient city, the Bayon temple. The tour, which also takes in the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as the famous Ta Prohm temple, ends with a gentle boat ride from the south gate to the west gate of Angkor Thom, where guests are picked up and taken to the five-star Hôtel de la Paix in nearby Siem Reap.

The evening ends with a gourmet dinner under the stars, next one of the ancient temples, with performances from local dancers. The meal, cooked by chefs from Borei Angkor includes local specialities such as Ban hoaw, steamed rice vermicelli noodles with mint, crushed peanuts, pickled vegetables and deep-fried egg rolls; and Kralan, a cake made from steamed rice mixed with beans or peas, grated coconut and coconut milk.

The next day, ride in a traditional oxcart to a local monastery. Upon arrival, you will meet with the monks and then begin a course focused on Buddhist philosophy and monastic life. This is followed by a simple dinner and an overnight stay on authentic cots in the monastery. Rise at the crack of dawn to the stirring sound of the drums. After breakfast, you will be introduced to meditation before spending a half day practicing the ancient art in the monastery. The holiday ends with a three-night stay at luxury resort Song Saa (which will open in February), where you can unwind with meditation and yoga classes on this island retreat.

For those who wish to breathe in culture even when asleep, Aman at Summer Palace in Beijing is a retreat from the bustling city, steeped in history. The trick is to find a peaceful hotel in a sublime destination. Romantic hideaway Santa Teresa hotel in Rio de Janeiro is situated in the leafy neighborhood of the same name, where crumbling colonial villas vie with street art. Situated above the city, with a view of the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, most of the rooms are decked out in furniture by Brazilian designers; choose a suite with a secluded terrace.

It's a short drive to the lively area of Lapa or the beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. Get away from it all with a walk in the city's lush botanical gardens before immersing yourself in the local culture with a Samba class at the Carlinhos de Jesus dance school. On Nov. 23, 1943, during World War II, United States forces seized control of the Tarawa and Makin atolls from the Japanese.

The Gilbert Islands (Gilbertese: Tungaru;^[1] formerly Kingsmill Islands^[2]) are a chain of sixteen atolls and coral islands in the Pacific Ocean. They are the main part of Republic of Kiribati ("Kiribati" is the rendition of "Gilberts" in Gilbertese^[1]) and include Tarawa, the site of the country's capital and residence of almost half of the population.^{[citation needed]}

Guadalcanal (Isatabu) is a tropical island in the South-Western Pacific. The largest island in the Solomons, it was discovered by the Spanish expedition of Alvaro de Mendaña in 1568. The name comes from Guadalcanal, a village in the province of Seville, in Andalusia, Spain, birthplace of Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of Mendaña's expedition.

During 1942-43 it was the scene of bitter fighting between Japanese and Americans in which the latter were victorious.

At the end of the war, Honiara, on the north coast of Guadalcanal, became the new capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. Guadalcanal is mainly covered in tropical rainforest and jungle, and it has a mountainous interior with an active volcano, Mount Popomanaseu. The population in 1998 was around 85,000.^[2]

西遞是安徽省南部黟縣的一個村莊。2000年 11月30日在澳大利亞凱恩斯召開的聯合國教科文組織第24屆世界遺產委員會會議作出決定，將中國安徽古村落西遞、宏村列入世界文化遺產名錄。

西遞始建於宋朝的元祐（宋哲宗）年間，由於河水向西流經這個村莊，原來稱為「西川」。因古有遞送郵件的驛站，故而得名「西遞」，素有「桃花源里人家」之稱。

這個村子的興衰都與胡家的命運緊密相連。西遞始祖為唐昭宗李曄之子，因遭變亂，逃匿民間，改為胡姓。胡家從1465年起開始經商，他們經商成功，大興土木，建房、修祠、鋪路、架橋。在17世紀中葉，胡家中有人從經商轉向官場所產生的影響使村莊得到發展。18世紀到19世紀，西遞的繁榮達到最頂峰，當時村裡有大約600家華麗的住宅。

西遞村中一條主道貫穿東西，與其兩側各一條與之平行的街道一起穿過很多窄巷。在敬愛堂、履福堂、刺史牌樓等公共建築之前有小廣場。今天，主要旅遊景點包括124幢保護完好的明清建築。大多數民居都對公眾開放。主要建築有明萬曆六年（1578年）建的青石牌坊，清康熙三十年（1691年）建的大夫第等。

JUST 250 or so miles to the west of the gleaming high-rises of Shanghai sits a window into a world hundreds of years old. Despite the dramatic upheavals brought by war, the Cultural Revolution and industrialization, the hamlet of Xidi, in the mountainous province of Anhui, along with other villages in the area, has managed to remain largely untouched since the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, starting hundreds of years ago. Wander the narrow, labyrinthine lanes and peek into the open-air courtyards of grandiose homes, with their wooden lattice windows, rock gardens, watercolors and calligraphy scrolls, and it can feel as if you are slipping back in time to the days of the Chinese emperors.

As more and more Chinese move to cities, the small villages of Anhui offer a respite. And perhaps even more surprising, young artists and entrepreneurs are embracing these spots with a renewed sense of pride in their modest scale and tangible sense of history.

After the sun begins sinking behind the whitewashed walls of Xidi’s houses and the day-trippers board their buses home, the art students, visiting from the large provincial capital of Hefei and other nearby cities, linger overnight or for the weekend. Perched behind easels in the granite-tile lanes or on rocks in the shallow streams flowing through the village, they appear inspired by the classical architecture, which has all but disappeared in their skyscraper-studded cities. “Young people don’t typically like this; they prefer big-city culture,” said Wang Nanyan, an 18-year-old from Hefei. “But I’m different. I’m an artist — I like these kinds of buildings.”

Two reasons these villages — about 20 of which are worth visiting, spread across the southern part of Anhui, an area roughly the size of Belgium — have retained their centuries-old charm are location and economics: they are set deep in the countryside of one of China’s poorer provinces, where residents have lacked the resources to tear down the old and start anew.

But preservationists have played a key role, too. In 2000, Xidi (pronounced shee-dee) and the nearby village of Hongcun were declared Unesco World Heritage sites. Rather than force residents out, Xidi officials wisely devised a plan to guarantee them a share of profits from entrance tickets to the town (104 renminbi, about $16.60 at 6.25 renminbi to the dollar), as long as they maintained the traditional appearance of their properties. Seeing opportunities, entrepreneurs from other parts of China began to trickle in, snapping up rundown properties to refurbish and turn into shops and inns. The result is that tourism is booming — aided in part by the villages’ proximity to another attraction, the famously striking Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), but mainly thanks to their historical and aesthetic appeal.

Xidi, in particular, has an illustrious history. Founded in 1047 by the Hu family, Xidi began to grow rich as a trading center during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). As the population swelled, the Hus gained power as imperial officials and built elaborate two-story compounds and giant archways, one of which still stands at the entrance to the town. The fortunes of the town began to decline came after the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), but signs of Xidi’s former glory still abound. (The name Hu, for one, is shared by about 80 percent of residents.)

The size of many of the former merchant homes still impresses. The most majestic were built in the 1600s and designed in the traditional Huizhou style (as the region was once known). Interior courtyards, filled with gardens and small fishponds, open on to formal meeting halls where portraits of ancestors hang from the highest points on the walls. Nearly every surface, whether wood or stone, is elaborated carved — the door frames, the braces supporting the ceiling beams, the second-story balconies. But perhaps the most distinctive features are the “horse-head walls” that bookend the rooftops, so called because the upturned edges of the multitiered walls resemble horses’ heads.

Li Guoyu, an artist from Shanghai, was drawn to this graceful architecture when she started looking for a property to turn into an inn in the early 2000s. The one she settled on wasn’t nearly as grand as others in Xidi — it was a teacher’s home during the Ming dynasty and was being used as a pigsty when she found it. But Mrs. Li saw potential in the 400-year-old property. “Many people dream of finding a paradise, but they never really find such a place,” she said. “But I did.”

In 2006, she opened the Pig’s Heaven Inn — named in honor of the building’s one-time function. The hotel is modest in size, with five bedrooms, a small courtyard garden and a third-floor lounge with stunning views of the village’s black-tiled roofs. But what it lacks in space, it makes up for in character: Mrs. Li has carefully appointed the interiors with antique chests, chairs and wash basins, as well as cheerful touches like mirrors painted with Peking Opera stars, vintage floral wallpaper, and lanterns and birdcages hanging from the rafters.

A short time later, Mrs. Li purchased a second property in the nearby village of Bishan — a Qing dynasty merchant’s home — which she transformed into a nine-bedroom inn and opened in 2008. She scoured the countryside to find interesting antiques (including a spectacular red and gold Qing-era wedding bed for one bedroom), hung art by her son, Mu Er, on the walls and planted an organic vegetable garden in the back. She believes her restoration work has inspired her neighbors to fix up their properties, too. “Old houses have memories,” she said. “When I’m old and pass this house along to my son, he’ll remember his childhood here. If I go back and look for my own childhood house, I wouldn’t find it because it’s gone already.”

Most tourists focus solely on Xidi and Hongcun because of their Unesco status and proximity to each other, but there are other hamlets in the Anhui mountains that have equally exquisite architecture and, more important, a fraction of the visitors. One is Zhaji, a two-hour drive north of Xidi. The tiny village is also made up of whitewashed homes with black-tile roofs clinging to the banks of a muddy stream, but the houses here are far simpler, belonging mostly to farmers. There are few shops and restaurants and no art students. Locals dry peanuts on giant bamboo baskets in the sun and make their own tofu. Xidi feels like Shanghai in comparison.

This rural idyll is exactly what Julien Minet was looking for when he became a homeowner in the area in the early 2000s. Mr. Minet, a Frenchman, had traveled around Anhui for years writing an ethnographic study on ancient villages for Unesco, and he took such a liking to Zhaji, he bought an abandoned Ming dynasty-era house in 2003 for the shockingly low price of 10,000 renminbi (about $1,570). Needless to say, it was a fixer-upper. “The house had chickens living inside,” he said. “But then I saw all the mountains outside. The panorama is just wonderful.”

After an arduous three-year renovation — which included finding antiques from the area and the addition of a small pool ensconced in bamboo, essential for the region’s scorching summers — he opened his three-bedroom guesthouse, Chawu, in 2006. Catering mostly to French tourists, including the occasional V.I.P. (a French education minister once stayed there), Mr. Minet aims to offer a traditional Anhui experience to his guests, with a personal tour of the village and “country food” cooked by one of his neighbors. His only concessions to the 21st century and his native France: free Wi-Fi and the pastis he serves beneath the chestnut tree in his garden at sundown.

Though he depends on visitors to make a living, Mr. Minet is mindful of the impact that tourism can have on the fragility of the region. In fact, when a Lonely Planet guidebook writer contacted him, he requested that he not mention the village; as a result, Chawu is not listed in the book. “In other places, all the activity is around tourism, but here people still live the way they always have,” he said. “It’s not all about money. That’s very important.”

〔編譯林翠儀／綜合報導〕已故蘋果共同創辦人賈伯斯傳記二十四日在日本上市，書中透露許多賈伯斯的「哈日」事蹟，包括賈伯斯喜歡日本料理、熱中學禪，一度想到日本佛寺出家，還經常帶家人「微服」暢遊京都，讓日本人很「甘心」。

此外，賈伯斯生前經常光顧加州矽谷的一家壽司店「陣匠」，該店日籍壽司師傅高橋一郎透露，今年六月下旬到七月間，賈伯斯以休養為由退居幕後期間，幾乎每週三次招待不同的友人到該店用餐；雖然大家都沒說破，但那些聚會看起來，就像賈伯斯與友人們的生前告別會。

賈伯斯除魚類外，主要以蔬食為主，因此很喜歡日本料理，壽司更是他的最愛。賈伯斯造訪這家矽谷壽司店，最近也成為美國媒體報導的對象。七月中旬，賈伯斯和妻子最後一次上門光顧，點了八種握壽司，但幾乎吃不到一半，鍋燒烏龍麵則一口也沒吃。師傅說，賈伯斯只是盯著鍋子一直看。

除了壽司，賈伯斯在大學輟學後熱中學禪，一度想到日本福井縣的永平寺出家。賈伯斯出家的念頭，後來被他的禪學老師知野弘文阻止，但熱愛日本禪學的他，婚禮還是選擇有誦經的佛教儀式，非常道地。

因為學禪，賈伯斯熱愛京都，數度帶著家人私下造訪京都，據說賈伯斯的兒女也感染了爸爸哈日的習性；兒子女兒成長到青少年時期，賈伯斯曾大方跟兒女說：「想去哪裡旅行都可以，老爸帶你們去」，結果長子與長女異口同聲選了「京都」。據說他的長女很喜歡京都「西芳寺」。

另外，賈伯斯到京都旅行，住的不是五星級大飯店，而是純日式老旅館「俵屋」。俵屋、炭屋和柊屋是京都著名的三大日式老旅館，顯見賈伯斯真的很內行。不過，據日本八卦週刊爆料，賈伯斯去年搭乘私人專機密遊京都，卻在出境時因攜帶「忍者飛鏢」登機，被日本海關以違反安全規定刁難。賈伯斯氣得大罵：「誰會笨到劫持自己的飛機？」「再也不來日本了！」但蘋果公關部否認此事。此外，賈伯斯招牌黑色套頭高領衫，當然也和日本有關，據說那是他在一九八○年代初拜訪SONY 工廠時，看到日本員工制服所受到的啟發。賈伯斯後來請了日本設計大師三宅一生為蘋果設計制服，卻在員工的噓聲下夭折。賈伯斯一轉念，乾脆為自己訂下「終身制服」。

【女人的房間】馬諦斯畫作裡的女人

葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士的先生是位醫師，中國屏風畫來自她先生的病人家屬，記誌一段奇特的緣分。

睡佛像旁的藍色圖畫，來自現居墨西哥的法國畫家傑哈．艾柯諾摩斯。

葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士與她鍾愛的花，在她溫暖與安全的繭／家中互相陪伴。

葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士的家，宛如森林小屋，就連腳下的「地牆」，也鋪上富麗多采的地毯。

7月底的巴黎，籠罩於綿綿細雨之中。紛紛離城返鄉或已前往異地度假的巴黎人，將這個城市一下子淨空，蕭瑟的街景反而給這個城市帶來難得的清靜。

這條於1550年落成的「渡輪街」（Rue de Bac），與「伏爾泰碼頭」（Quai Voltaire）及「塞弗街」（Rue de Sevres）交界，原為建造「杜勒麗宮」（Palais des Tuileries）而存在，起始目的在於橫跨「皇家大橋」（Pont Royal），將石塊運送到塞納河對岸；如今，這條長度僅有1150公尺的小街，成了家居精品店的集聚地，不少巴黎的富商與政要，如當今首相法斯瓦．弗隆（Francois Fillon），也選擇在此居住，由此可見此街的魅力。我卻難以想像，居住在這條商業街上的居民，怎能不受紛擾俗世的干擾？

然而，當我自喧囂的「渡輪街」踏進法斯娃．葛洛斯戈杰雅特（Francoise Grosgogeat）居所的一開始，便立即感受到遠離塵囂以後的寧靜，伴隨而來的放鬆，促使我的感官得以舒展，全心全意地沉浸於女主人一手打造的這座鳥語花香的世外桃源。

花藝中的「自由」與「現代」

葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士的家，宛如一間森林小屋，從每扇窗戶望出去，入眼所見，盡是一片濃濃綠意；環顧室內，沒有一面牆壁，不被繪畫給覆蓋，好似女主人恥於將「沒穿上衣服」的白牆展現於世人面前，就連腳下的那面「地牆」，也被鋪上富麗多采的花樣地毯。

我步入其間，有如置身一條繁花似錦的大道上，顧不得眼前的目不暇給，只知貪婪地賞玩著陳列於五斗櫃上的青銅雕像，上了彩釉的陶器、琉璃藝品，與那千姿百態的花束，它們將整間大廳打造得如一件活生生的馬諦斯畫作，洋溢著色彩與生命的舞動。

葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士為我端來她精心準備的下午茶點。為了泡好這壺茶，她先讓我在一堆著名的茶葉商標Mariage Freres，Kusmi Tea，Fortnum & Mason間隨意選擇，再於一整櫃子的精美瓷器裡，挑出這套白瓷花卉茶具，一點也不含糊地以定時器設定三分半鐘的泡茶時間以後，才肯將茶壺裡的濾茶器取出，雖然，這款「馬黑兄弟」（Mariage Freres）伯爵紅茶的滋味有些黯淡，但是，邊欣賞著這套繪有「鳥語花香」圖的茶具，邊品嘗著葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士自製的這道「杏桃千層派」甜點，著實讓這個下午的開端洋溢著溫暖與幸福。

「你最熱愛的是什麼呢？」我滿心疑惑地提出我的疑問，眼光卻不由停留在她滿室生香的花朵。

「人生裡，第一次激起我熱情的是『花』。」靦腆的葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士，平靜的眼神裡閃現著火花，娓娓道來這段她與花結識的經歷。

1965 年，二十六歲的她，已是兩個孩子的母親，每天為了張羅一家大小的生活起居而操勞。那天傍晚，她好不容易做完家事，哄得孩子入睡以後，總算有了一點屬於自己的時間，無意間，她翻到一篇關於「花藝」的報導，原本對此完全外行的她，突然萌生了想學花藝的念頭，而當時的歐洲，大部分的花藝學校皆在倫敦，她尋尋覓覓，終於找到一間教授花藝的教室，她自茱利．馬克斯（Jules-Max）與玻蔓（Baumann）女士那兒學習到如何解放自己，讓創意源源不斷地湧現。

1968年5月，當巴黎街頭四處竄動著示威的學生與對峙的警察時，葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士一個人抱著她的花束作品，心無旁騖地穿越大街小巷來到花藝比賽的現場。

「我得到第一名。所有人都為我花束展現出來的『自由』與『現代』而震驚！」葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士掩不住滿臉的喜悅與驕傲，告訴我當年的花藝講求的是形式與規則，沒有人膽敢像她一樣，無拘無束，只知盡情揮灑。

三十五歲那年，她與朋友共同創辦了一所花藝學校，每天為了張羅花藝學校裡的各項雜物而裡裡外外奔波，一個月後，她發現右耳失聰，經過診斷，住院醫師斬釘截鐵地告訴她，沒有任何治癒的可能！她卻在六個月後，近乎全面地恢復聽力。這個奇蹟的發生，對於非教徒的葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士來說，實在是太不可思議！

我卻深信，這源自於葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士一家子的祖宗庇蔭，以及一直以來，她根深蒂固地厭惡戰爭，崇尚和平。

「只有那些從來沒有真正經歷過戰爭的人，才會動輒把『打仗』兩字掛在嘴上！」她憤怒地責備那些好戰分子，並且告訴我，沒有任何人可以在經歷過戰爭以後，還能存活。

波西米亞姑姑的教化

「妳猜猜我結婚幾年？」容光煥發的葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士告訴我：「這段關係至今已延續了五十二年，而且，我即將晉升為曾祖母了！」

她極其自豪地告訴我，她的三個姑姑在1930年代裡可算是前衛女性。20年代就前往巴黎，浸淫於那個年代的藝術氛圍，過著波西米亞式生活，瘋狂地愛上運動、爵士樂與文學，並成為自然主義的忠誠信徒，這也意謂著：在家時，她們往往是一絲不掛。

三位姑姑對文學的熱愛與造詣之深，不但讓她們寫得一手好字，家人之間的溝通也多以書信往返，結果，直到三位姑姑過世為止，家書多達數千封，為葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士的家族提供了最好的文學素材，而透過這千封家書，可見外婆一家人對動物的關愛，也可感受到她們雖然捉襟見肘地過日子，物質條件極為拮据，心靈卻很富裕。

1949年後，舉家遷居波爾多，大哥前往巴黎讀醫科，成婚以後，與新婚妻子定居凡爾賽，偶爾在醫院的守衛室過夜，過著波希米亞式的生活，她因與嫂嫂處得很好，來巴黎度假時就住在哥哥嫂嫂家裡，也就是在那間醫院的守衛室，她遇見了這生的真命天子。

「那時，他還是醫院的心臟病科實習生，沒有任何經濟基礎，一年後，他向我求婚，那年我才二十歲。一想到，從今以後，我就要與這個人共度此生時，內心十分惶恐！然而，在那個年代，女人對自己的婚姻沒有發言權，婚姻大事得由『父親』說了才算！而大部分的女孩，都在二十一歲前步入婚姻生活。二十歲那年，我們成了婚，沒想到這個關係竟然成功，且延續至今。」

每幅畫都牽連著情感

令人難以置信的是，葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士家中擺放的每一幅畫，每件物品，都有一段淵遠流長的故事，甚至她與這個家的結緣，也因畫而起。

這間公寓在1930年代由一位性學專家巴拉佐里（Palazzoli）擁有。客廳原為會客室，她先生的書房為辦公室，兒子的房間則做為診療室之用。當時，她正為了找尋大些的公寓而焦頭爛額，外子姑丈的某位商界朋友的太太，卻因熱愛野獸派畫家阿爾伯．馬奎（Albert Marquet,1875-1947）的塞納河畫作而四處拜訪藝廊老闆，也就在那個時候，一位藝廊經營者告訴她：「巴拉佐里是阿爾伯．馬奎作品最重要的蒐集者，他不僅打算轉讓這位畫家的作品，連公寓也一起賣出。」後來，那位富商的太太不僅買了畫，還買下這間公寓；富商為了擁有姑丈手中的股票而與姑丈協議：「我知道你的姪子想找大一點的房子，我願以這間公寓換取你手中的股票。」疼愛姪子的姑丈最後同意交換，她們一家子也得以搬進這間公寓，並於十年後，成為這間公寓的擁有者。

她領我來到一座插滿了玫瑰花的櫃子前，指著牆上的那幅畫作：「剛搬進此居所的時候，我的先生為了將病歷表歸檔而需添購一只文件櫃，就在找到櫃子的同時，我看到上方掛的這幅畫作；我第一眼就著迷了！當時，我們沒什麼存款，最後家具商勉強同意我們以分期付款的方式購買；沒多久，家具商聯絡我們，希望以原價買回，我沒有同意！家具商也沒有太堅持；後來，我找來一位古物鑑賞家，他告訴我：『妳的這幅畫作出自17世紀尼古拉斯．普桑（Nicolas Poussin,1594-1665）的連襟──克勞德．杜蓋（Claude Duguet）之手。』」

餐廳牆壁的那聯中國屏風畫與那套閃閃發光的鍍金餐桌椅吸引了我的目光。

「這是一位朋友送的。她的先生是外子的第一位病人，我倆因此而結緣，六十歲時，她成了寡婦，唉……醫學還是有它的極限；她獨自活過四十三個年頭，過世前，她堅持把這聯屏風畫連同這套餐桌椅贈予我當紀念，於是，我把它放在這兒。」她說到此處，語氣有些無可奈何。

不過，在這些繪畫中，我最喜愛的還是掛在睡佛像旁的那幅藍色圖畫。這位現居墨西哥的法國畫家傑哈．艾柯諾摩斯（Gerard Economos），畫這幅圖的時候，特意將畫布掛在舞台上當成背景，而他則在聆聽香港「京崑劇場」演員傾情演唱《牡丹亭》這個悽美愛情故事的同時，也在這巨幅畫布上，揮灑下他的情感。當時，坐在台下觀眾席裡的葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士，在欣賞崑曲藝術的同時，也見證了這幅風景畫的誕生。

對葛洛斯戈杰雅特女士來說，「家」，是一個溫暖與安全的繭，而這個空間裡的每一件物品，都連結著家族的情感或友人的記憶，如她自言：「我從來不喜歡參加社交宴會，那兒多的是虛張聲勢、故作姿態的人們；我們也不屬於非常有錢的那個族群，人生對我而言，從不是『快速致富』，而是心靈的富足。」 ●
