George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four at Barnhill, a farmhouse on the remote Scottish island of Jura:

Orwell lived at Barnhill from 1946 to 1949, intermittently drafting and finishing the novel. He chose Jura to escape the noise, smog, and damp of London, and to find a clean environment to help him recover from tuberculosis.

Here are some other details about Orwell's time on Jura:
He stayed with his sister Avril, housekeeper Susan, and son Richard.

He almost perished in the Gulf of Corryvreckan, along with his adopted son, niece, and nephew.

He left Jura in January 1949 to get treatment at a sanatorium in Cranham, Gloucestershire, and never returned.

He died seven months after Nineteen Eighty-Four was published.
