Jun 4, 2024 — The tomb was opened in the presence of a host of distinguished figures. A skeleton was discovered and the doctors declared (on what grounds?)

Nestled within the picturesque Loire Valley, the Château d'Amboise stands as a testament to France's rich history and architectural grandeur. Yet, beyond its impressive façade and panoramic views, the château holds a profound secret that draws countless visitors each year: it is the final resting place of the unparalleled Renaissance genius, Leonardo da Vinci.

In 1516, Leonardo da Vinci, at the invitation of King Francis I, journeyed to France, bringing with him a lifetime of artistic mastery and innovative thought. He took residence at the nearby Château du Clos Lucé, dedicating his final years to scientific exploration and artistic endeavors. On May 2, 1519, Leonardo passed away, expressing a desire to be interred in the collegiate church of Saint Florentin within the Château d'Amboise grounds. His funeral, held on August 12, 1519, was a modest procession attended by sixty impoverished individuals, reflecting his humble nature.
However, the tides of history were unkind to the Church of Saint Florentin. The edifice suffered extensive damage during the French Revolution and was ultimately demolished in 1802. In 1863, amidst the ruins, a discovery was made: skeletal remains accompanied by stone fragments bearing inscriptions suggestive of Leonardo's name. These remains were respectfully relocated to the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, a Gothic masterpiece perched on the château's grounds.
Today, the Chapel of Saint-Hubert stands as a beacon for admirers of Leonardo da Vinci. Visitors from around the globe pay homage to the artist, scientist, and visionary whose legacy continues to shape our understanding of art and innovation. The chapel, with its intricate design and serene ambiance, offers a fitting tribute to a man whose ideas transcended time. As you wander through the Château d'Amboise, the presence of Leonardo lingers, inviting reflection on a life that forever altered the course of human creativity.
