On February 13, 1945, the German city of Dresden was reduced to rubble by a series of bombings that killed 135,000. These aerial shots show the damage done across Germany during WWII:http://ti.me/1xbup0f

Still they march, every Monday in Dresden, as they have done since October. Numbering about 18,000, they call themselves Pegida, or “patriotic Europeans against the Islamisation of the Occident”, and they are against too many asylum-seekers and migrants. But as xenophobic marches continue in parts of Germany, others stand uphttp://econ.st/14ClysK

Dresden struggles with modernisation

The eastern German city of Dresden shares a rich history of architecture, an era of communism and a modern outlook to its urban landscape.

Before the Second World War, the city was known as the "Florence of the North" – famous for its spectacular baroque architecture and art treasures.
Towards the end of the war British and American bombers largely flattened the city’s centre. Since German reunification, Dresden has regained much of its former glory through building restoration or reconstruction.
The Elbe River valley running through the city has also been named a UN World Heritage site. But plans for a new bridge across the river have divided residents — pitting preservationists against urban planners who say Dresden has to modernise.
