It may sound like a joke, but it is deadly serious. Fifteen towns along New York’s border with Pennsylvania are threatening to secede and join the latter state. The towns sit on top of the Marcellus Shale—full of natural gas—and New Yorkers are not allowed to tap the gas because of a state ban on fracking. The neighbours have new cars, freshly painted houses and jobs, all from shale, while the New Yorkers' economy is stagnant. Is the secession likely to succeed?http://econ.st/1vSHKLW
