Today we have the internet to share things; but before, there was the World Expo. When Ravel and Debussy went to the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, they came across gamelan music and the dance of Java. They absorbed it, and used the combination. It’s music that's borne out of absorbing new ideas and cultures, and now, to our ears, it sounds quintessentially French.
