Felice Festa di San Marco—happy Feast of Saint Mark!

Immerse yourself in this Venetian landscape today as we celebrate the annual festival held in Venice celebrating the city’s patron saint, Saint Mark. Today is also known as the Rosebud Festival, when men traditionally offer a single rose to the women they love.

People have admired the romantic canals and architecture of Venice for centuries. Contemporaries of this work’s artist, Richard Parkes Bonington, saw the poignant city described in Romantic literature through the artist’s works.

Bonington’s on-the-spot oil sketches of Venice portray the subtle effects of light and atmosphere. At this time, the Italian city was not yet a popular attraction for European artists. Bonington, a British artist, played a leading role in capturing a modern vision of Venice’s beauties––an ethereal vision that is quite distinct from that of the native Italian view painters who preceded him.
