Japan beat Taiwan 4-3 and will next face the Netherlands for a place in World Baseball Classic final round
Sho Tanaka drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the
top of the 10th inning as Japan beat Taiwan 4-3 in the second round of
the World Baseball Classic.
Tanaka's deep fly to the warning track in left allowed Nobuhiro Matsuda to score from third.
Toshiya Suguichi retired Taiwan in the bottom of the 10th to nail down the win.
Two-time defending champion Japan will face the Netherlands on Sunday with a chance to secure a spot in the March 17-19 final round in San Francisco.
Taiwan must beat Cuba on Saturday in order to move on.
Japan is attempting to win a third straight WBC title without its top players from Major League Baseball.
Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning on Friday to lead the Netherlands to a 6-2 win over Cuba in the second round of the World Baseball Classic.
"This was a huge win for us," Netherlands manager Hensley Meulens said. "We had a plan to attack and the guys executed it well. Jonathan had a big game with a three-run homer and another run in the eighth. The guys hit the ball well."
Schoop's blast into the left field stands at Tokyo Dome gave the Netherlands a comfortable 5-1 lead in the first game of the second round in Asia.
Alfredo Despaigne homered in the bottom of the second inning to give Cuba its first run. Yulieski Gourriel homered to left in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-2. Schoop then doubled in another run in the eighth.
"We hit into five double plays and that caused a lot of trouble for us," Cuba manager Victor Mesa said. "We gave a three-run homer in the sixth and that was big. We had a lot of runners on base but couldn't score."
Cuba must win tomorrow to have a chance to advance to the final round in San Francisco on March 17-19.
The roster for the Netherlands features two players on major league rosters: Simmons of the Atlanta Braves and Roger Bernadina of the Washington Nationals. Former New York Yankees outfielder Andruw Jones now plays for the Rakuten Eagles in Japan.
Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run double in the ninth inning and closer Jason Grilli escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half of the frame to help Italy beat Mexico 6-5 in Thursday's opening game of Pool D in the World Baseball Classic.
Mexico closer Sergio Romo (0-1) entered to a loud ovation, but gave up three hits, the last a fly ball by Rizzo to the warning track in left field that outfielder Edgar Gonzalez couldn't handle in the sunlight at Salt River Fields.
Grilli gave up a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but closed out the game by getting Jorge Cantu on a ground out.
Nick Pugliese (1-0) allowed no hits in 1 2-3 innings to take the win.
