Green Link of Old Sugar Railroad
Sky Bridge Green Link of Old Sugar Railroad The old Fu Hshing railway bridge was built due to the development of sugar industry. In addition to advance Beigang Township and Singang Township’s economic growth, it also became a necessary route between the religious believers. Our team planned a linear landscape pass through Beigang town to connect neighboring green spaces, separate sidewalk and traffic lane to continue local urban texture. We attempted to connect the completed construction in Singang Township in Chiayi County. Leading the crowd to Beigang riverside from the town center and connecting Beigang Chrysalis with Fu Hshing Railway Bridge and then Beigang River, we want to establish the goal for Beigang to become a regional recreational resource. The unique terrain of Beigang railway slope in both urban and rural landscape provides pedestrians an interesting experience. Touring Beigang by walking in tree crown heights, we tried to keep distance between mankind and plants by raising the walkway 30 cm higher than the horizontal surface. To allow this, we used punching grille as walking pavement, so that pedestrians can easily enjoy the green without trample. At the end of Beigang landscape trail, a cantilevered steel platform points to the old Fu Hshing railway bridge to remind people of the connection in the old times. The structural system of concrete footbridge changes throughout itself; transforming from deep beam and slab form into box beam construction. Due to the transformation of concrete footbridge, pedestrians also experienced a change of space from walking “on” the bridge to walking “into” the bridge. As you walk through the bridge, a view is framed by the bridge itself. Inside the image is the Fu Hshing railway bridge. The technique of using the expanding and contracting space and further focusing to a specific sight/view creates a sort of experience that connects the past to the present. The change in structure and material and the space experienced as one walk passes the bridge is what’s valuable. Due to the fact that this project expands in a large range, it is divided into four cases. Beigang Chrysalis is the first completed case, along with two more footbridges to be completed and connected to Beigang town center, and lastly expecting to activate commercial and cultural activities. Beigang town is a more conservative and religious place, so it’s hard to convince residents that the project will bring in a great diversity of advantages. Once all of these cases are linked up, Beigang town will show both residents and tourists its attraction and beauty.
