Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris burned on Monday. Its spire fell. But the French Gothic structure was not fully lost, especially in memories of beloved national symbol.
Monday was a tragic day for the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, where a massive fire collapsed the cathedral’s spire and spread to one of its towers. The structure of the famed cathedral was saved after firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the northern belfry. “The worst has been avoided, although the battle is not yet totally won,” said French President Emmanuel Macron, who had rushed to the scene. "So this renovation was done to try to protect the cathedral, perhaps ironically, given what has happened this evening," reports Kate Moody of France 24.
The soaring cathedral of Notre Dame, famed for its flying buttresses and its stone statues and gargoyles that peer out over Paris, has seen the coronations of kings and emperors, the beatification of Joan of Arc and other famous events.

The moment the Notre-Dame cathedral spire collapsed.
A fire swept through the roof of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, sending flames and huge clouds of grey smoke billowing into the sky.
The fire, which broke out during Holy Week and ahead of Easter celebrations, destroyed the cathedral's spire, which collapsed inward as workers scrambled to save irreplaceable artwork.
The blaze may have been caused by an accident during renovations, the Paris fire department said.
