Vendome Column, 1806 - 1810
Place Vendome, Paris
Bronze (fused with the 130 cannons taken by Napoleon from the Russian and Austrian armies), 44 meters high and with an average diameter of 3.60 metres.
The column, a symbol of imperial power, was destroyed in 1871 following the insurrection of the Paris Commune. The petition to tear down the column was written and presented by the painter Gustave Courbet. After the fall of the Commune (lasting from 18 March to 28 May 1871), Courbet was held morally responsible for what happened and was sentenced to six months in prison and to pay the costs of rebuilding the column. Released from prison, he took refuge in Switzerland, where he died in 1877.
In the comments some photos of the era with the column torn down
