Good morning from Italy! You've heard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but do you know the leaning towers of Bologna? The Two Towers – Asinelli (taller) and Garisenda (shorter) actually have quite an interesting story. Legend has it that their names come from two families who were competing to build the taller tower to show their power between 1109 and 1119! However, due to a lack of solid documentation, this story cannot be totally proven.
The towers have been used by scientists studying the motion of heavy bodies and the earth rotation, as well as serving as sight towers in WWII. They were even written about by both Goethe, in his "Italian Journey" and Charles Dickens in his "Pictures from Italy".
