When British imperialists with dreams of linking the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa to the source of the Nile in Uganda began forging a railway inland from the coast, its spiralling costs and staggering human toll soon led critics to call it the “lunatic line.”
Building the 600 miles of narrow gauge railway, which still carves a path through modern day Kenya, claimed more than 2,000 lives between 1895 and 1901 as legions of indentured labourers grappled with malarial swamps and man-eating lions at the height of Europe’s scramble for Africa.
