3. Perfume Series No. 1: Osmotheque / Susan Stone
This week, we kick off our series about the intangible, irresistible, intoxicating... Perfume.
And we start off in the city that cultivated the art of perfumery more than any other in Europe --- Paris.... When Louis the XV took over the throne in the 18th century, perfume really came into its own. His court was so famous for its intoxicating scent that it was called "le cour parfumee", the perfumed court. But did you ever wonder what that smelled like? Or what other historical figures, like Napoleon, doused themselves with before dinner? Well, the answers lies in Paris -- at The Osmotheque. It's a sort of museum of perfume?a conservatory of fragrance, located in the city of Versailles outside Paris. Its mission is to collect and catalogue scents, and to recreate perfumes of the past. Susan Stone has more.
