Flooding in Europe Continues as Rivers Swell

As the Danube peaked at about 29 feet on Sunday, threatening the flood walls of Budapest, a dike on Germany’s Elbe River burst, forcing 1,200 to flee their homes.

A wet spring has swollen the Danube and Elbe rivers in Eastern and Central Europe, forcing thousands to evacuate and causing damage worth billions of euros.

The river Elbe has swept record floodwaters through Germany's eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. One dike near Magdeburg burst overnight despite efforts by emergency workers. The water mass is draining toward Hamburg.
