From the June 18, 1945 MISCELLANY - PISA'S LEANING TOWER—Europe's best-known building stands unscarred by war and already is welcoming tourists. According to LIFE, "The old Italian city of Pisa was shelled many times in the last five years but no harm came to its famed leaning tower. Standing far from the center of town, the campanile (bell tower) was spared, although shells damaged its companion Romanesque buildings on Pisa's Piazza del Duomo."
