Study Leader

Mark Van Baalen

Mark Van Baalen
Associate of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
Mark Van Baalen will speak about the role of the Mekong River, one of the great rivers of Asia, and how its course affects the ecology of Southeast Asia, and how that ecology will be threatened on the one hand by upstream dams in China, and on the other by sea level rise and changes in precipitation patterns brought about by climate change. In addition, he will speak about the return trip by sea of Marco Polo after 1275, of Xeng He and the great Chinese commercial fleets of the 14th and 15 century, and how the current skirmishing over islands in the South China Sea is fundamentally about natural resources, particularly oil.
