Tonight's Art Moment is "Traveling Shrine" from the 8th-9th century. This rare, portable Buddhist shrine is one of the most historically significant works in the museum's Asian collection because it demonstrates how the teachings and imagery of later Buddhism were transmitted from India to Central Asia along the Silk Road. In some ways, the piece is a cultural hybrid. It was made from Indian wood in a Kashmiri style, but also includes some figures and elements that are associated with Central Asian art. Thus, the origin of the shrine is debated. The composition and identities of the depicted figures suggest that the shrine may have been intended to represent a mandala to be used for meditation.
