Latvian Architect Preserves Old Homes in Riga

The Latvian capital Riga is famous for its brick homes and art nouveau buildings. But there is another aspect of the city's architectural heritage that has been ignored for a long time -- the Czarist wooden houses, that have fallen into disrepair.

The Lativan capital Riga has been prized as the most beautiful city on the Baltic Sea because of its architecture. But there is more to the city than the fancy turn-of-the-century boulevards. Old wooden buildings built more than a century ago were long snubbed by Communist regimes, interested in steel and concrete high rises.
But a new movement, "Latvija Nostra" might turn Riga into a new Mecca for the historic building movement. And one female architect is leading the pack: Zaiga Gaile.
