Staff have moved into the new headquarters building for PricewaterhouseCoopers at 7 More London, on the south bank of the Thames near Tower Bridge.
BDP’s design team, which provided building services and internal fit-out, held a pivotal role in the collaboration process of this job, working closely from the outset with PwC, the developer (More London) and its team including the architect Foster and Partners and the contractor Mace. This process has ensured a continuity and devotion to sustainability of the design, and BDP ensured the project is the first building in London and the first major office in the UK, to be awarded a new elite standard for BREEAM of ‘Outstanding’.

The building includes environmental innovations such as the use of 80% recycled aggregate within the concrete used, and the recycling of waste heat to cool and warm the building, and 25% of energy produced on site using recycled cooking oil and the use of solar thermal panels.
The 48,000 sq m building has 4,500 workstations and caters for 6,300 staff. Space utilisation is optimised with a staff to workstation sharing ratio of 1.4 to 1. Every person books their position on an open plan platform or a conference room via a central hotelling system, with some groups hotelling at 4 people per workstation and 8 sq m per person in the practice areas.
BDP’s design offers a choice of work settings around the local neighbourhoods, intended to generate the warm welcoming feel found in some good quality hotel environments, and to enhance the working communities which reflect the dynamics of the PwC business units.

The open plan practice areas are limited in size and positioned with their local cellular offices and break out areas, to give a local community feel. A high degree of collaboration space is provided for PwC staff to work and create, engaging with their clients, emphasising the client experience and supporting innovation and workshop style activities.
The project has been shortlisted in the International Interior Design of the year category for the Emirates Glass LEAF Awards, which will be announced on 16 September.
