Rescuers were desperately racing against time to reach 200 miners trapped
underground on Wednesday after an explosion and fire at a coal mine in
western Turkey killed at least 274 workers.
The death toll rose on Wednesday evening, to make the accident the worst in
the country's mining history. Turkey's previous worst mining disaster was a
1992 gas explosion that killed 263 workers near the Black Sea port of
Zonguldak.
And by Wednesday afternoon, protests had already begun over the tragedy in
Istanbul, with police firing tear gas and water cannon to disperse a crowd
of several thousand demonstrators. Trade unions called a national one-day
strike.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister, declared three days of national
mourning, ordering flags to be lowered to half-staff. Mr Erdogan postponed a
one-day visit to Albania and planned to visit Soma instead.
